The present invention discloses a manufacturing method for polarization maintaining optical fiber couplers which are used for joining light signals and at optical fiber branch points. The disclosed manufacturing method employs polarization maintaining optical fibers, and describes a method for mutually aligning the stress applying parts of such optical fibers so that polarized optical signals are maintained in the polarized state when transiting such couplers. In the manufacturing method of the present invention, the above mentioned positioning step is characterized in that, an image is obtained of the light transmitted through the fiber from a light source (24) on one side of the optical fibers with an image sensor (28) (TV-camera) positioned on the opposite side, whereby by examining the light intensity distribution of the fiber images thereby obtained while rotating one or both of the component optical fibers (12), the component optical fibers (12) are brought into the desired alignment.
