A so-called make-up mirror comprises a housing (3) with at least one light chamber (5, 7). The light chamber is covered by a mirror (11) which has a transparent support (15) with a reflective coating (17). The reflective coating is constructed in such a way that when the illuminating device is switched on the light emitted from the light source can essentially pass unimpeded through the reflective coating and when the illuminating device is switched off (dark background) total reflection of the light impinging from outside onto the reflective coating (17) is achieved, so that when the illuminating device is switched off it is not recognisable and an enlarged mirror surface is produced.
