An improved apparatus and method for providing uniform fin-type back seals with flexible packaging material (3) for use in conjunction with form-fill-and-seal machines is disclosed which utilizes a movable tucker plate (6) disposed between the mated edges (3A, 3B) of the flexible packaging material (3). When sealing, the tucker plate (6) moves against the body of the packaging material (3) and prevents lateral movement of such material (3) during the sealing operation. The tucker plate (6) is joined to a sealing platen (8) in a manner which maintains a fixed distance between the tucker plate (6) and the sealing platen (8) until a threshold sealing pressure is exceeded.
