<p>There is disclosed the transmission type liquid crystal display device having a high contrast and an excellent achromatic property. The display device comprises a liquid crystal cell, a pair of the polarizing plates and a backlight source, and is charachterized by: (1) the product DELTA n.d, in which DELTA n is a refractive anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal and d is a thickness of the liquid crystal layer, is 0.65 to 0.90 mu m; (2) in the relation to the twist angle alpha , the setting angles beta and gamma of the polarizing plates and a correction angle delta satisfy the following Equations (a) and (b) : Equation (a): alpha + beta - gamma - 180 DEG = 90 DEG - delta 0 DEG < delta < 30 DEG Equation (b): beta + gamma = + 90 DEG or - 90 DEG ; (3) a pretilt angle theta 0 of the nematic liquid crystal molecules contacting the electrode substrate is not less than 10 DEG ; (4) luminous intensity ratios of red light to green light and red light to blue light in the backlight source are 1.2 or more; and (5) a luminous intensity of the backlight source is not less than 200 cd/m<2>.
