The improvements consist in starting with a sofa which has the appearance of a conventional corner-type sofa and establishing in it three modules, an intermediate module 1 forming the actual corner unit and two side or end modules 2-2' joined in an articulated manner to the intermediate module and capable of being fitted sideways one to the other when the item of furniture is converted into a double bed. The back 5-5' of these end modules 2- 2' is physically independent of the modules in order not to interfere in their use as a bed. <IMAGE>
