PURPOSE:To achieve a higher speed and accuracy of measurement, by automatically measuring the position of an object to be measured in the direction of a reference line and in the direction perpendicular to the reference line based on an image processing technology utilizing a curve or an inclined shape provided on the object being measured. CONSTITUTION:One side rim of an object to be measured presents a linear shape L and a pair of curved shapes C1 and C2 in which other side rims are mutually continued while facing each other sandwitching a reference line A-A. The density level in a square area r5 set in the perimeter of the shape C1 varies in the direction tilted clockwise with respect to the line A-A while that in a square area r6 set in the perimeter of the shape C2 varies in the direction tilting counterclockwise with respect to the line A-A. So, a deviation between the areas r5 and r6 changes in the form of the curved shapes C1 and C2. this enables the determining of the position of the object being measured in the direction perpendicular to the reference line A-A based on the deviation thereby achieving a higher speed and accuracy of measurement.
