PURPOSE:To obtain a nickel electrode having thin size, high performance, and high productivity by applying an active material comprising nickel hydroxide and a specific cobalt compound to a mesh-shaped, cobalt plated, alkali resistant metal current collector. CONSTITUTION:90wt% nickel hydroxide, 10wt% at least one of CoO, alpha-Co(OH)2, and beta-Co(OH)2 are mixed, and a carboxymethylcellulose aqueous solution is added to the mixture to prepare a slurry-like active material. The active material is applied to a nickel mesh current collector comprising 2-5mum thick cobalt- plated, 80mum diameter nickel wires, and they are dried and pressed to form a 200mum thick nickel electrode. The conductivity on the interface between the current collector and the active material is increased. Since cavities between the mesh wires are decreased by press operation, volume efficiency in the electrode is increased. This nickel electrode is combined with a paste type cadmium electrode to form an alkaline storage battery. |
