The appliance (100) comprises a washing tank (1) into which oil-contaminated sand to be cleansed or the like is introduced, a reservoir (2) for washing liquid, normally washing water, and an adsorption vessel (3). Washing liquid from the reservoir (2) is transferred to the washing tank (1) and there is mixed with the material to be cleansed. The contaminated washing liquid is transferred from the washing tank (1) to the adsorption tank (3) and is there brought into contact with an adsorbent. The pollutants sediment (settle) together with the adsorbent, and the clarified washing liquid is returned from the adsorption vessel (3) to the reservoir (2). The washing liquid from the reservoir (2) can be admixed with surfactants. The washing liquid thus treated is split externally after a washing phase has been carried out. <IMAGE>
