In a method for generating an acoustic signal of variable loudness, in which an electric signal of constant frequency and amplitude and variable pulse width is generated, the electric signal is amplified electrically and the electric signal is converted into an acoustic signal in an electro-acoustic sound transducer, for the simple and cost-effective generation of acoustic signals of this type having virtually arbitrarily variable loudnesses and without the sound colour of the generated acoustic signal changing in the event of loudness changes, the frequency of the electrical signal is chosen to be higher than the upper limiting frequency of the sound transducer. In addition, a second electric signal of constant frequency, amplitude and pulse width is generated, the frequency of the second electric signal corresponding to the frequency of the acoustic signal and the second electric signal being superimposed on the first electric signal.
