3,3-Dimethyl-4-pentenoic acid of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting a mixture of isoprenol and prenol (the molar ratio is pref. 9.5:0.5- 4:6) with triethylorthoacetate (TOA) of formula (II) in the presence of catalyst e.g. H, Pd, Se or an acid to form ester cpd. of formula (III), and hydrolyzing (III). In (III), R is 3-methyl-3-butenyl or 3- methyl-2-butenyl. Pref. the acid catalyst is phenol, benzoic acid, phosphoric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid or methylacetic acid.
