The electric and/or magnetic fields penetrating outwards through the housing of the camera (3) by the activation of the flash unit (1) integrated in the camera, are used to produce an electrical starting pulse activating the auxiliary flash unit (2). The electric field for producing the starting pulse, emanates from the leads and the parts connected with these, which control the ignition pulse acting to ignite the flas tube of the integrated flash unit (2). The unit for carrying out the method includes an electrode (7), mounted on the camera housing near to the reflector (6) of the integrated flash unit (1), which is connected to the ignition circuit of the auxiliary flash unit (2) across an electric lead (9) or a lead (9) and a plug (5) with the synchronised input (4) of the auxiliary flash unit (2).
