The invention relates to a process for cooling and dedusting high-temperature coke in at least two stages, the coke being cooled in the first stage to a temperature below about 800@C. According to the invention, the coke is to be cooled in the first cooling stage to a temperature of 400 to 800@C, preferably about 600 to 700@C, then continuously drawn within a short time through a water-dipping bath and then held in a closed final evaporation vessel in a water vapour atmosphere. <IMAGE>
