PURPOSE:To reduce the consumption of an ink ribbon while preventing the decrease of printing quality and the burning of the ribbon, by a method wherein a means in which a ribbon feed speed is made variable is provided and printing dot density is made variable according to the variation of the ribbon feed speed. CONSTITUTION:When a printing mode is a LQP mode, a microprocessor 13 reads a character pattern A for printing in LQP mode time stored in ROM 15 and sends it to a printing head 4 to carry out printing. At that time, a ribbon feed speed corresponds to a transfer speed of a carrier 8. In the case where a printing mode is draft mode, when a microprocessor 14 reads the character pattern A from the ROM 15, the microprocessor 14 thins out the character pattern A on the even-th column to be modified and forms a character pattern B of a low dot density. It sends this character pattern B to the printing head 4 to carry out printing operation.
