In a method for metering free-flowing substances, especially liquids, by pouring a desired quantity out of a container which is open at the top, in which the container held vertically with its opening upwards is tilted and the container content is caused to run out over the edge of the container opening, whereupon after pouring out the desired quantity the container with its remaining content is tipped back and the outlet stream is thereby interrupted, it is provided according to the invention that the container is lifted up before the initiation of the tilting process and its gross weight is determined, whereupon the tilting process is initiated in an accelerated manner and is continued until the desired quantity established as a net weight has run out, whereupon the tilting movement is decelerated and is tracked to the running out of the container content, and that the tilting back of the container upon reaching the container gross weight reduced by the desired quantity is accelerated until the interruption of the outlet stream is carried out.
