Those cops (18) which contain only a deficient quantity of yarn or which have been ejected as being allegedly incapable of being unwound by the automatic winding machine (1) are delivered for rewinding to a specific winding station (7) of the automatic winding machine (1) which is selected and organized for the unwinding of these cops. To make the yarn tension uniform during the rewinding, in the case of each cop (18) to be provided for unwinding for this specific winding station (7), the respective yarn quantity located on the cop tube is determined automatically and is processed to form a yarn-quantity signal.
