(A) in the mfr. of a high strength, bioactive, composite ceramic material, used for dental or orthopedic implants, involving prepn. of a powder mixt. of a first bioinert matrix-forming powder and a second calcium phosphate-based powder, (a) the first powder comprises one or more of TiO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3; (b) the second powder mainly comprises hydroxyapatite and/or tricalcium phosphate; and (c) the powder mixt. is compacted and then hot isostatically pressed at above 50 MPa to obtain a composite material in which hydroxyapatite and/or tricalcium phospahte are evenly dispersed in a metal oxide matrix. (B) In a modification, the first powder mainly comprises silicon and the compacted green body is nitrided to cause silicon nitride formation and densification. (C) A novel composite ceramic material comprises a high strength inert matrix contg. 5-35 (pref. 10-25) vol.% of an even dispersion of calcium phosphate based particles of 30 microns max. size and max 5 (pref. max. 2) microns mean particle spacing. (D) Also claimed is a body comprising one or more portions of the body mainly comprising one or more of TiO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3.
|
