PURPOSE:To detect at an early period underwater poison flowing into a water tank by breeding an aquatic animal in the water tank, picking up the image of the behavior of the aquatic animal, processing the image and detecting the abnormal conditions of the aquatic animal. CONSTITUTION:Water to be tested is admitted into the water tank and the aquatic animal such as fish 14 is bred in the water tank. An image pickup device and image processor are provided above the water tank to pick up the image of the action of the fish 14. The picked up image signal is transmitted to the image processor, by which the signal is converted to a various density image signal. The signal is binarized and the position coordinates of the fish 14 are calculated. The image of the fish 14 is converted to fine lines to form a fine-line image 14'. The angle theta between the image 14' and the water surface of the water tank are calculated. The abnormality of the angle theta is decided by an abnormality decision circuit. Decision is made that the fish 14 raises its nose on the water surface when the number of times of the abnormal angle thetaexceeds a prescribed value. The underwater poison is thus detected. Since the underwater poison is detected by the nose raising action of the fish, the abnormal water quality is detected in an early period.
