A method of controlling the shrinkage which occurs in the solid state polymeric product, after a polymerizable liquid which comprises at least one monomer is polymerized to obtain a polymeric solid, comprises carrying out the polymerization in presence of a shrinkage-controlling effective amount of a preferably finely-divided crystalline solid possessing zeolitic sorption properties and which contains available apertures of adequate diameter so as to permit at least one species of participating monomer molecules to enter the apertures, or which had been pre-loaded with at least part of said at least one species in the apertures prior to the polymerization. The method may be applied to an automatically generated computer-designed three-dimensional model, obtained by piecewise assembly and polymerization of a polymerizable liquid. The invention further relates to a polymeric solid composition obtained by the method of the invention, such as e.g. the automatically generated model just mentioned, especially when this has been generated within a removable solid environment which prevents the transient stresses of expansion or shrinkage from causing piece-to-piece distortion. The polymerizable liquid including the crystalline solid also forms part of the invention.
|
