Rotating shafts have critical speeds, and cannot therefore be operated within the range of these critical speeds. As a result of harmonic vibration occurrences, several critical speeds can follow one another in very close succession, thereby adversely affecting hypercritical operation. To make hypercritical operation possible within wide speed ranges, the shaft is weakened in the longitudinal area in which the reversal point of its second critical bending vibration lies. This weakening can be effected particularly by equipping the shaft with a flexible intermediate section (3). <IMAGE>
