PURPOSE:To suppress the absorption loss in a waveguide small by forming an optical waveguide layer of a II-VI compound semiconductor which has a large energy gap. CONSTITUTION:The branch type optical waveguide has a metallic electrode for electrode application at the branch part of the optical waveguide, which has at least clad layers 12 and 14 made of the II-VI compound semiconductor and the optical waveguide layer 13 made of the II-VI compound semiconductor, having a larger refractive index than the clad layers 12 and 14, on a substrate 11 while at least one layer is formed by epitaxial growth. The waveguide layer 13 is formed of the II-VI compound semiconductor layer having the large energy gap, so the wavelength of waveguide light is shortened. Further, the II-VI compound semiconductor has a wide band gap. Consequently, even when light (1mum band) in the same wavelength range as before is guided, the absorption loss in the optical waveguide can be suppressed low. |
