The controller operates with an expanded control language which comprises an expanded set of control words. A data area corresponding to the control words is retained in the numericaL controller. Control processing software for operating on the control words is provided so that they may be defined and separated according, for example, to the machine on which they will be employed. The re-assignment of the processing for each unit is effected by simply changing control word subwords of the processing program which facilitates re-assignment.
