<p>NEW MATERIAL:A benzoquinone dicarboximide derivative of formula I [R is H or (substituted) hydrocarbon group]. EXAMPLE:N-(Butyl)-5,6-dichlorobenzoquinon-2,3-dicarboximide. USE:An oxidizing agent. The compound of formula I is especially useful as a dehydrogenating agent for steroid compounds, for example, for the dehydrogenation of a steroid compound of formula V to obtain a dehydrogenated product of formula VI, has a stronger oxidizing power then that of chloranil, does no thave such toxicity as that of dichlorodicyano benzoquinone and is inexpensive. PREPARATION:A compound of formula II is reacted with a compound of formula III (R<1> is lower alkyl) to form a new dihydroxyphthalimide of formula IV, which is oxidized and chlorinated with 35% hydrochloric acid and 70% nitric acid to provide the compound of formula I.</p> |
