A process for preparing indoles of formula (III) comprises reacting glyoxal with aniline or its nuclear-substd. deriv. of formula (I) (mol. ratio of 0.5-20:1) at 15-150 deg.c to produce a cop. of formula (II), and heat-decomposing the cpd. of (II) in the presence (or absence) of a catalyst. In the formulas, X is C1-4 alkyl, nitro, OH or halogen; n is 0-4. The indoles are used as an intermediat of dyes, medicines and perfumes.
