A small amount of ferromagnetic substance in the form of insulated (isolated) particles is applied, in the form of a suspension, to the fabric. The device comprises an applicator which deposits a ferromagnetic substance on the fabric by spraying or jet, an electromagnet which magnetises this substance and a detector which measures the variation in the magnetic field. The invention is in particular applicable to the manufacture of fabrics, for the marking of defects, for control of origin and for any identification purpose.
