The present invention relates to a photoelectrooptic device for the modulation of radiation and of images. This device uses, in an arrangement of optical materials, two effects, one a photoelectronic effect which causes an electronic quantity to vary as a function of the incident radiation and the other an electrooptic effect causing an optical radiation transfer quantity to vary as a function of the electronic quantity. For example, the device may consist of a photoconductive layer 6 and of a liquid-crystal layer 7, the device being placed between two electrodes 8, 9 and between two polarisers 3, 4. In addition, the invention provides electronic circuits 10 for controlling the optical operation, and an optical complement making it possible to correct the defects in the device. The invention applies particularly to decreasing or increasing contrast, producing negatives, false colours or any other transfer function which can be performed with electronically-controlled optical modulators. <IMAGE>
