This mat has a combination of bristles or tufts 1 made of cotton or other material having a high coefficient of water absorption, and bristles 2 or other very stiff elements possessing a memory whereby they return to their normal upright state. These two types of bristles or other elements are closely interwoven or connected together in such a way that the bristles or other elements of the second type act as supports to the moisture-absorbing bristles or tufts 1. The bristles or tufts having the high coefficient of water absorption may optionally be twisted around, or with, the very stiff bristles supporting them. This mat is intended to be placed at the entrance to a building so that the soles of shoes can be wiped on it. <IMAGE>
