The present invention relates to a deposit taking and returning device for utility objects. The device is characterised in that the lock 1 comprises at least one lever 9 mounted so as to pivot in the lock housing and of which one, 12, of the arms includes a hook 13 for latching the key 4 into the lock housing and the other arm 14 comprises a recess 14a of a shape matching the periphery of the correct coin to be inserted and adjacent to the insertion aperture 8a for the coin, the lever 9 pivoting under the thrust action exerted on the coin inserted into the recess 14a in order to bring the arm 12 to an unlatching or freeing position of the key 4. The present invention finds an application for latching trolleys in stations or airports. <IMAGE>
