The invention relates to an autonomous electric lighting device including a gas discharge tube 1 which is powered by a voltage doubling circuit. According to the invention, this device includes at least one DC voltage doubling circuit D1, D3, C1, C3 wired up to one terminal of the AC supply 2 and a switch D reversing the polarity of the DC voltage applied to the terminals of the tube 1. The invention makes it possible to produce a gas discharge tube lighting device exhibiting no ageing effects. <IMAGE>
