In a process for applying at least one metal, metal oxide, nitride and/or carbide on the surface of an object, the metal, metal oxide, nitride and/or carbide is liquefied and sprayed onto the surface in the liquid state by means of a gas stream and allowed to solidify. Exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine are used as the gas stream. The molten metal, metal oxide, nitride and/or carbide is sprayed in surrounding atmosphere consisting of air. A device for implementing the process comprises a spray device consisting of a conveying device for at least two wires of a metal, metal oxide, nitride and/or carbide, an arc-generating device for melting the material of the wire and a vaporizing device provided with a gas line for the molten wire material. The device possesses an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine, which is connected on the exhaust gas side to the gas line.
