The glass tube heat exchanger (1) comprises a rectangular housing (2) having an upper tube plate (5) and a lower tube plate (6). Parallel glass tubes (7) extend between the tube plates (5, 6). Raw (crude) gas (ROG) flows through the glass tubes (7). Clean (cleaned) gas (REG) is conducted in a clean gas duct (9) transverse to the glass tubes (7). The effective exchange areas on the glass tubes (7) are determined by wedge-shaped internals (internal parts) (11). The internals (11) consist of flat plates (12) which resemble tube plates and are respectively arranged in pairs in a stepwise fashion at a spacing (A) which reduces in the direction of flow of the clean gas (REG). <IMAGE>
