A friction coupling (1) incorporates a counter-pressure disc (3) bolted (2a) to the crankshaft (2) of an internal combustion engine, with an axially displaceable pressure plate (4) and spring washer (4a) acting on a coupling disc (5) threaded on to an intermediate shaft (8). This shaft rotates in roller bearings (16) within a structural member (15) positioned by a piston rod (23) which slides in a cylinder (25) hinged to the gearbox casing (18). The double-acting piston (14) is driven by hydraulic fluid from a valve (26) controlled by a pulse generator (27). ADVANTAGE - Speed-proportionate damping of rotational oscillations is achieved simply and effectively.
