The block sorting mechanism for books has grippers with angular gripper ends. On the vertical arm (2) of the angle there is at least lesat one vertical slide guide (3) in which the gripper element (4) is guided vertically and lockable. The basic element of the gripper has a divided bearing (14) at the end remote from the gripper end. At least one gripper arm (9) is mounted on the basic gripper body (1) to swivel against the effect of a spring (12) wherein the gripper face (5) of the gripper element and the gripper face (10) of the gripper arm (9) are mounted opposite each other and run parallel. The book or block to be sorted is pushed by a slider out slightly from the stack so that it can be gripped by the opened gripper. USE/ADVANTAGE - The gripper for block sorting of books can be fixed interchangeably on a holder in the collecting machine.
