Cutting tool for working wood comprises a substrate made of tool steel such as high speed steel or high Cr alloy steel or hard metal which has a CrN, Cr2N or mixed CrN-Cr2N layer of 0.5-6.0 micro-m thickness on its cutting surface. The chromium nitride layer thickness is pref. 1-3.5 micro-m An intermediate layer of TiN or Cr may be used which has a thermal expansion coefft. between that of the substrate and chromium nitride. The coating layer is produced by ionic plating. ADVANTAGE - The tools can be mass prodn. coated at low cost with the resulting tool showing high cutting efficiency and long work life when cutting wood.
