MOLDED HEAT INSULATOR AND PROCESS FOR ITS PRODUCTION.

A moulded heat-insulator which is made of carbon fibre felt spirally wound to form laminated layers. The carbon fibre felt is integrated with the carbide of a resin that lies between the layers. The integrated carbon fibre felt is continuously laminated without undulation in a circular shape. The moulded heat-insulator is produced by the following process: (i) spirally winding a carbon fibre felt (a) with a film and/or a net, at least one of which contains a carbonizable resin, while applying a tension (b) to the film and net and thus forming laminates, (ii) curing the resin in the laminate, (iii) carbonizing the laminate in an inert gas atmosphere or in a vacuum. The carbon fibre (a) can be a fibre carbonized using high-temp. heat treatment. The tension (b) is varied as the winding progresses. In the step (i) winding can be carried out while applying pressure using a pressing roll.
