PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound having good tint, utilizing recovered alcohol, by distilling a higher alcohol in the presence of an alkaline substance and reacting with a sugar. etc. CONSTITUTION:A higher alcohol is separated preferably from a reaction product produced by the reaction of a sugar and an alcohol or from a reaction product produced by reacting a sugar with a lower alcohol and reacting the reaction product with a higher alcohol. The separated higher alcohol is distilled in the presence of an alkaline substance (e.g. sodium hydroxide) or washed with an alkaline aqueous solution and reacted with a sugar or a reaction product of a sugar and a lower alcohol to obtain the objective compound.
