Elements aiding exchange of material and/or heat between counterflowing liq. or gaseous media in a column consist of corrugated or folded strips vertically aligned with the flow direction. The corrugations or folds are at an angle to that direction, and those of one strip contact those in the next strip. The strips are formed with multiple slits, pref. parallel to each other and transverse to the flow direction, and hence inclined to the corrugation direction. The slits, which may extend over a number of corrugations, form projecting narrow slats of the strip material, e.g. steel, which may be bent upwards in Venetian blind manner, with the gaps upwards, and possibly alternating from face to face of the strip.
