The hybrid drive uses an i.c. engine (1) and a generator / electromotor with a battery (3) for holding the electric charge. The i.c. engine r.p.m. are held constant by a control device (6) for obtaining optimum fuel economy and min exhaust emissions, the control device (6) responding to the battery charge level to switch between operation of the i.c. engine (1) at its optimum operating point and standstill of the i.c. engine(1). The control device can be overridden by the driver to allow the vehicle to be driven solely by the electric motor in defined areas and reduce the exhaust emissions to zero. ADVANTAGE - Good performance and increased range.
