In a channel in at least three sections lying one behind the other in the channel axis, the quantity of electric dc or ac fields are periodically changed. The mark-space ratio of the changes or their phase relations are such that a travelling electric field occurs so as to produce a penstaltic constant motion of the electro-viscous fluid. The valve effect is achieved by the variation in viscosity and the space alteration by the volume variation ofthe fluid in the electric field.
