The stress measuring device determines the spiral angle, the curvature and the curl of a sample strip removed from the band and held in a clamp. A light beam (5) is directed onto the sample strip to obtain a shadow (10) on an image screen (4), which is evaluated using its distance from the clamp point coinciding with the optical axis (6) of the light beam (5), to obtain the required parameters. Pref. the image screen (4) is marked with a scale allowing direct read-out of the shadow points, when the clamp for the strip is at a defined distance from the screen.
