Preparation of substituted pyridines of the general formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) by the reaction of acrolein and ammonia with alkanals or ketones of the general formula (II), the acetals of the alkanals, R2-CO-CH2-CO-R1 II where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl of from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl, aryl, or arylalkyl and R2 is an alkyl or alkoxy radical; the reaction is carried out in the presence of zeolites.
