An aromatic compound having sulfonyl groups, as an intermediate or raw material of polyimides having a good and well-balanced heat resistance and moldability is effectively produced by reacting a compound represented by the general formula, R-Ar-R wherein Ar is <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> Y is a bond, oxygen atom, sulfur atom, SO2, CH2 or <IMAGE> and R is a hydrogen atom or -SO2X and X is a halogen atom or alkali metal, with a compound represented by the following general formula, <IMAGE> wherein X1 and X2 are simultaneously methyl groups or form <IMAGE> and Z is a hydrogen atom, alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl group having 6 to 8 carbon atoms and R1 is a hydrogen atom, -SO2X, halogen atom or nitro group, X is a halogen atom or alkali metal and R and R1 are not same simultaneously, either of which contains -SO2X group as a necessary group.
