PURPOSE:To improve the durability of a friction element as well as traveling feeling by carrying out speed change via an intermediate speed change stage when an engine load is larger than a defined value while removing the routing of the intermediate speed change stage when smaller than the defined value. CONSTITUTION:At the time of jumping shift-up speed change like when accelerator opening is suddenly reduced, if an engine load is higher than a defined value, the jumping shift-up speed change is carried out via an intermediate speed change stage by a speed change restricting means C to reduce the load of a friction element. On the other hand, when the engine load is lower than the defined value with the load applied to the friction element being within an allowable range, the routing of the intermediate speed change stage is removed by a restriction removing means D and direct jumping shift-up speed change is carried out, thereby, obtaining favorable traveling feeling by the speed change suited to the variation in the driving condition. |
