The movable section of the 'nose' of the locomotive (3) is hinged horizontally under the windscreen (2). Pneumatic or hydraulic jacks (11), under the drivers cab, are used to deploy the nose. Behind an impact pad (10) in the centre of the nose, buffer heads (6a) are mounted on the chassis of the locomotive. Upon impact, the energy is initially absorbed by the jacks (11). If further undissipated energy is present, it will be absorbed in the normal way by the buffers and the structure of the locamotive.
