PURPOSE: To enhance the distribution function of injected fuel by specifying a position where a combustion chamber composed of an ring-like part is formed in a piston in the top of which the combustion chamber is recessed, and by defining an annular communication part having a width which circumferentially varies between the ring-like part and a columnar part in the ring-like part. CONSTITUTION: A piston 2 slidably fitted in a cylinder 1 is formed in its top part with a combustion chamber 3 composed of a ring-like part 4 having a center at a position deviated from the center line of the piston 2, having a radius R of a center piece diameter of the ring-like part 4 and a radius (r) of the circular cross-sectional shape thereof. The combustion chamber 3 also has an axis 4' parallel with the cylinder axis 1' and a columnar part 6 which is opened toward the upper side 5 of the piston and which defines a throttle part 6' on the side facing the ring-like part 4. In this case, the axis 4 of the combustion chamber 3 is laid between a rounded front end part 12 of an injection nozzle 8 and the cylinder axis 1. Further, a narrowest zone most adjacent to the front end part 12 of the nozzle is formed in an annular communicating part 14 between the ring-like part 4 and the columnar part 6.
