1. Zirconium dioxide powder which has optionally been stabilised, and process for its preparation. 2.1 The use of aqueous solutions and the isolation of precipitates are substantial disadvantages in the processes, practised to date, for the preparation of zirconium dioxide powders. In addition, the products often do not have the desired flow, compression and sinter properties owing to an inhomogeneous distribution of the stabiliser and the presence of large crystallites and agglomerates. 2.2 By melting zirconyl chloride, optionally with a stabiliser, and reacting the chloride with gaseous ammonia, evaporating off water and any hydrogen chloride, calcining the reaction product and removing ammonium chloride by sublimation at elevated temperature and optionally milling the calcined product, an optionally stabilised zirconium dioxide powder having good properties can be prepared without the use of the disadvantageous process measures. 2.3 The optionally stabilised zirconium dioxide powder is suitable for the production of sintered articles which can be exposed to high mechanical and/or thermal loads. |
