In the method a simple way has been developed to bring cells, etc. for individual cultivation; the entire process is automatic and the time that elapses for a separated cell is well below a second. The basic principle is that the cells flow in a tube in which based on an electron microscope image they are separated into approved or rejected and when an approved cell is observed a hole 13 in a belt 12 passing through the flow tube moves the cells together with a small amount of liquid from the tube whereas a new hole in the belt replaces this part in the tube. A strip-like belt can also be used in certain cases for individual culturing by placing it together with the hole above a nutrient substrate. In the method it is described how individual cells are obtained in rows on a growth substrate together with a small amount of water beneath an oil drop. <IMAGE>
