The member comprises a pair of hollow end sections and an intermediate core. Each hollow end section is welded to the intermediate core in such a way that they form two weld joins or lines extending along the structural member. The intermediate core is predominantly flat. (i) passing an essentially flat metal band or strip via a plurality of shaping posts or stations in order successively to deform the opposite free edges of the metal band in such a manner that they provide a pair of essentially hollow end sections on which a respective free edge is located next to an intermediate core interposed between each essentially hollow end section; and (ii) welding the respective free end to the intermediate core in order to form two weld joins or lines which extend along the structural member.
