The control rod is provided with absorbent material comprising boron carbine and hafnium mixed in powder or granular form, after which it is pressed, or pressed and sintered to cohesive bodies of suitable size and shape so that with no or relatively little further processing they can be inserted in the rod absorbent spaces. In the prepn. of the control rod, it is also possible, and simpler, to provide the absorbent spaces with bars of bodies of hafnium and boron carbide, as compared with filling and packing boron carbide powder and then to introduce hafnium bodies. - To complete the control rod neutron absorption, suitable combustible absorbents are added to the fuel, such as gadolinium oxide. The rod itself is of stainless steel, or a nickel-based alloy. It comprises four absorbent plates forming a right-angled cross, the centre line of which coincides with that of an incorporated coupling bar. |
