A new group of pentaerythryl diphosphonates and poly(pentaerythryl diphosphonates) are described. Flame-retardant compositions are also described, which include a thermoplastic polymer and a certain amount of selfextinguishing agent consisting of one of the above-mentioned pentaerythryl diphosphonates or poly(pentaerythryl diphosphonates).
