A control system for a gas turbine engine (346) receives a signal representative of a first target engine operating condition e.g. temperature (320) and also receives a signal (324) representative of the corresponding actual engine condition. The system produces (322) an error signal, and a gain means (330) adjusts the gain of the error signal to provide a desired change in a controlled engine parameter e.g. the position of a variable exhaust nozzle (VEN) to achieve constant thrust. The output of the gain means is then combined (334) with a target VEN position and used to adjust an actuator (344). Position feedback from a sensor (348) may be employed.
